Shyamlal Christudas on Trusting the Journey and Embracing Uncertainty

“My head was always on the chopping board. If things go right, you’re a hero. If something goes wrong, you’re the first to get shot.”

For Shyamlal Christudas, it takes courage to step into a role where the stakes are so high. For Shyam, that leap was less about chasing titles and more about chasing meaning.

From Teacher to Technologist

Born in South India, his first role was as a faculty member teaching programming languages. He loved the intellectual challenge but quickly realised he wanted something more tangible. “I really wanted to have some sort of hands-on experience, which you can only get when you join a technical company,” he said.

That drive took him from classrooms to Wipro Technologies, then to Accenture, and ultimately across continents — from India to the UK, Singapore, and finally Australia.

Finding His Calling in Deployment

As a programmer, Shyam often felt disconnected from the bigger picture. He coded line after line, yet couldn’t see how the pieces fit together. Then he discovered deployment. “That was the first time I saw someone who literally knew end to end,” he recalls. “The deployment guy talks about build, testing, migration, interfaces, go-live. It fascinated me.” He moved into deployment — and found his passion.

The Orchestrator

Shyam describes deployment as less about perfection and more about orchestration.

“Deployment is like orchestrating, right? You get all the people in, you talk to the issues, resolve it, then you start hitting those milestones.”

For him, it’s a human endeavour as much as a technical one. Trusting people, building rapport, and carrying the weight when things go wrong are what define him as a leader.

Embracing Uncertainty

Shyam’s motto is simple: trust the journey.

“There is nothing like a perfect plan. No matter how many times you do dress rehearsals, there will always be surprises. Don’t panic. Step back, see the bigger picture, and adapt.”

He has led countless high-stakes deployments executing numerous successful go-lives. But the real achievement, he believes, is not in flawless execution — it’s in guiding teams through the uncertainty with steadiness and trust.

Beyond Titles

“I don’t measure success in terms of titles. Success is purely a byproduct,” Shyam says. “Leadership is not just about titles… it’s the ability to empower others and create an environment where people love to work with you. Stay humble and stay true to yourself.”

Recharging Through Simplicity

Outside work, Shyam finds clarity in badminton. The sport keeps him grounded and energised, a reminder that balance matters. He also mentors younger colleagues, sharing the lessons he’s gathered across two decades: embrace challenges, never give up, and always see failures as stepping stones.

A Journey of Connection

Looking back, Shyam sees a career not defined by codes or cutovers, but by people. From teaching students in India to guiding deployment teams across continents, his story is one of connecting dots — between technology, teams, and human resilience.

“As Steve Jobs said, you can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. As a Deployment Lead, I trust the journey, embrace uncertainty and follow my heart.”
